Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complex martial art, principally based on grappling and joint lock techniques together with basic strikes and sweeps, taught masterfully here in this DVD series. It focuses on three of the key areas that are essential to understanding the art of BJJ: the guard position, passing the guard and submissions. The aim of this DVD is to introduce the viewer to the fundamental skills required so that they can develop them with a partner or in a class situation. Having a strong guard is crucial in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and in this volume, martial arts champion Rick Young uses a wide variety of training techniques to demonstrate how to sweep and control the opponent from both a closed and an open guard. * * * * POST VIEWING NOTES * * * * Definitely lots of Gracie Barra techniques and then some. Lots of commentary from the instructor as he does the techniques ("make sure you have a good grip here", "use the collar or neck here", etc). He's obviously very talented with good technique and clearly a "real" black belt from the Gracie system. Decent use of alternate angles so you can see both sides of the moves � not great, but acceptable. Similar to going to a very good seminar - not lots of fluff, just lots of good moves and comments on how to best do things. LOTS of techniques... LOTS... Chapters include: - Attacking from closed guard - Open guard - Tripod sweeps - Attacking the leg More chapter stops would have been nice, but these breaks work pretty well. Video quality on this DVD is above average and quite acceptable, production values about average. Sound is good and everything said is easy to understand. Rick Young has a slight accent (well, it's an "accent" if you're from the United States), but no trouble understanding him.
