DVD - Koshen Judo #1

From the back cover: Taught by Judo's gray haired seniors much of this information has been lost until now. These seniors, all in their 60's or 70's, roll around and throw each other as if they were half their age. It's obvious these are masters of the art and very skilled.

Featured is Masahiko Kimura (1917-1992) whose unique ability was second to none. 5' 7" and built like a body builder, Kimura beat Helio Gracie in 1951 in Brazil by repeatedly throwing him, using his specialty "oso-to-geri". Gracie, a worthy opponent would not tap out even with a broken elbow. Finally his corner had no choice but to throw in the towel. Kimura was pronounced winner by TKO.

You will be amazed at all the information you'll learn. Everything from reversals, locks, and escapes to unique chokes. Many are just never taught and are all but forgotten until now. An absolute must for all martial artists interested in ground work (nei waza).

The lighting and picture quality for perfectly acceptable (especially considering it was obviously a film transfer). Sound quality (voice over) is fine too (but...) the narration is in Japanese. While it's not bad as an instructional video - since it shows the moves several times - it's NOT for beginners.

Clearly this is for someone familiar with judo (or that speaks Japanese) and wants to examine "old" judo techniques and learn from guys that are CLEARLY masters. The information on the back IS accurate - these guys know their stuff and it's probably useful for intermediate and advanced students to see more "pure" techniques to polish their own.
