Not great for judo.

This is a quality garment with good construction and reinforcement. Also has a slimmer fit, which is something I was looking for: a judo gi for the slim guy.

But as another reviewer has noted, this gi very much has a BJJ cut: Skirt is very short, and after shrinkage, the sleeves have grown too short for me, too. Sleeves have narrow opening that might not be legit in competition judo. I'm 5'11", weigh 163, and went with a size 4. Pants fit well, though they have shrunk well above my ankles. Jacket is now too small for real judo use (and I've only been washing in cold water and line drying).

So, my search for a perfect judo uniform for a slim dude continues. Will keep using the pants, which are very good, but the top goes in the closet for my son to grow into. Don't want a size 5 because I suspect it, too, will have the short skirt.

This is a good gi but the truth is a bjj cut gi all the way. The length of the skirt and the sleeve are a dead give away. its heavy enough (more like a middle weight) to be used in judo practice but not in comps. Also 1) it would never pass the sukiteki 2) they are really starting to crack down on bjj gis in judo comps. For bjj this is a great gi built to last like a judo gi and cut like a bjj gi i love it at bjj class and my class mates hate it. This is probably one of the best hybrid gis on the market. If your a high level tournament judoka this is not for you, if your a bjj guy or need a gi that you can take to judo and bjj this is for you.

Another thumbs up! Review by Jordan

I doubt you could find a better fitting or more comfortable double weave gi out of the box than this Piranha Gear one you are looking at right now. All the other reviewers aren't kidding. And yes, the personal note on the receipt assures you that you are indeed a valued customer, appreciated, and will not be left high and dry should you have any problems/concerns/etc.
I'm going to buy another one in blue, myself! (as soon as I can unload my "other" gi to someone who it will fit better!)

I bought this gi a couple of months ago after a short correspondence with them about sizing in which they were very helpful. I'm 6'1" about 200 lbs and was about to order the size five, but they suggested I get the size four because they run a little big. They were right on, it fits perfect.

The personal note was a nice touch and they also send a pamphlet on how to care for your new gi. After wearing this gi for a couple of workouts I sold my Mizuno, I will continue to buy Piranha Gear products.

Basics: I have had this gi for close to one year. It started out a second gi to rotate out with a Fuji single weave, but it's become my easy favorite. I am BJJ blue belt and roll 3-4 times a week.

Fit: I have an A2. I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 160. Pant size is 29" waist with 30" length, shirt size is 15 1/2" x 33". The A2 size is perfect for me. It comes long in the arms and legs, but I simply washed in hot water, and used the dryer sparingly until they length was correct. I no longer use the dryer or hot water and there has not been any shrinkage since. The gi fits snug (not tight). I really do not like: (1)swimming in my gi, (2)having my gi pulled over my head, or (3)being choked with the bottom of my own lapel. The snug fit helps with these things. I never have a problem moving my arms or legs. When closed, the lapel bottoms end up a couple of inches shy of the side slit - meaning the kimono sides do not overlap around past your hips. If you tend to be larger around the middle, you may want to order up a size. The collar is as wide as the Fuji, but thicker. The sleeve cuffs are the same width as the Fuji, but the pant cuffs are about 1/2" narrower.

Quality: When it arrived there were a couple of threads hanging around. These were not defects, just a leftover of the weaving process. I clipped them off and haven't thought about it since. This is a SUIT OF ARMOR. Multiple stitch lines everywhere, reinforced seams, overlapped fabric. The cuffs are folded back and have extra reinforcing fabric stitched in. I wash this gi after every roll and hang dry. It is in perfect shape after close to 100 rolls and washes.

Function: This gi is stiff when air dried. It is a little rough on your neck when you are warming up but softens as you sweat. It is very awkward for your opponent to grab and manipulate. Be prepared, the skirt is short - very short when compared to a cut like a Gracie-Barra. I like this and it works well with my game style. The collar is cotton (versus rubber) and so can take up to two days to dry in the air. Even so, there is no mildew smell or damage. No collar will make up for skipping drills, but this one is harder for my partners to manipulate because of its weight (making an excellent competition gi).

Look: Plain and white - I put my school patches where I want them.

Overall 5 out of 5 stars and I would definitely buy it again. There are no actual "cons", but know your preferences - this gi is heavy duty with trim fit and a short skirt. Good Luck!

Great product and BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE Review by Kitoshakai Geoff

It took me several tries to find what I was looking for, but I finally found it at Piranha Gear. Had I come here first, I could've saved myself a lot of time, not to mention restocking fees & additional shipping & handling fees charged to me by other vendors.

Piranha Gear, on the other hand, has been nothing short of outstanding to do business with.

This uniform is outstanding quality for the money. It's very thick & heavy - so be sure that's what you're looking for. My pants did shrink a bit more than expected - but this was largely my fault because I washed in hot water. Still, they sent a replacement pair without hesitation or additional expense.

I will not need a new gi for a long time, but when I do I will come back to Piranha Gear immediately.

Great Gi Review by Em

I'm a little bit chubby (which I'm working on), so my old Gi was too small.

I got this one, and was slightly worried at the weight because it is much heavier than any I have worn before, and a little hot in summer, but I shouldn't have worried. This is a top quality Gi and is so sturdy I love practicing with it on.

Piranha has wonderful customer service and their shipping was very fast. It was a pleasure to buy from them.

If you are tall and thin I would definitely recommend it. The sleeves and pant legs are nice and long, but the uniform is not baggy in the chest or waist. The weave is solid, but not overly heavy. The inside is very plush for a double weave, and seems to reduce monkey bites. If you plan on drying it in the dryer (not recommended) go for the next bigger size.

I liked the personal note that was sent along with the items. Even my Coach was impressed with the quality of this Gi. Definitely one worth buying.
