Below we've listed the total length of the hakama. The koshi-ita (back board) is about 4" of that total length. We've listed the approximate heights along with the total length, but we've found people have a very wide preference for where the hem should fall (between well above the ankle all the way to touching the ground). That means the TOTAL LENGTH is probably the measurement you want to pay the most attention to when viewing the size chart. Your waist size is not too relevant because the design of the hakama allows so much room - either way.

The slit in the side is about 13.25" (top of koshi-ita (back board) to mid-hip).
