How long to become "Karate Man"

How long does it take to become proficient at martial arts? Someone actually did a study!

The National Center for Biotechnology Information actually did some TESTING to figure out how long it takes to become proficient at a specific number of martial arts movements (<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3289195/" target=">the full study is here</a> if you want to read it - pretty well thought out study actually).

In summary, 15 volunteers without any martial arts background were taught 21 different moves such as blocking, strikes, and simple defenses. The study was based the techniques using Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, and military-style self-defense. They were taught during 45 sessions and results reviewed weekly.

The researchers found it was an average of 29 hours of instruction to become "proficient" in the different skills.

BTW they found the most difficult things to teach were elbow strikes to the rear, striking with thumbs to the eyes, and blocking with the arm.

Of course this is just doing the movements/techniques "properly". As most people know (or can guess), being able to do these in an actual, high-stress, critical incident is a whole other thing. But interesting that someone has tried to quantify it in some what. I guess it's tough to get volunteers to actually be attacked. ; )

This is the first time I've ever heard of someone doing something like this before, so please let me know if you know of another study... Or spot Mr. Miyagi hanging out a shingle... I'm a slow learner and spent YEARS trying to learn this stuff!
