Shipping Policy Questions

How much is shipping?

It depends on what shipping method you select, how much your total order weighs, and where you're shipping to (we ship from our warehouse in California).

Since there are a couple variables, we do have the shopping cart set up to give you the exact amount of shipping BEFORE you have to commit to the order.

Depending on the shipping method, you'll probably find that you can add a small item to your order and the shipping price doesn't go up at all (so two pairs of shorts and a t-shirt might cost the same as two of each for shipping). Stick them in the shopping cart and see - you can always take them back out.

When does my order ship?

We ship almost all orders within one business day.  Most orders go out the same day - as long as they're received by noon (Pacific time) - but some days are REALLY busy and later orders might not go out until the next day.  We do try to get them out the same day when possible - especially any Express orders like FedEx Overnight, 2-Day, etc.  Orders shipping via Ground usually go out the following day (the Ground truck pickup is actually late morning - so it's packed that day, just goes out with the next truck).

APO's and international orders may require an extra day for processing.

If you are paying by check or money order, we'll need to hold your order until funds clear the bank. Please note that if you are using a *checking account* with PayPal or Amazon Pay, they typically hold the funds for 2 - 4 days before clearing your order for shipment.

How does it get shipped?

Inside the US, orders are usually sent with the United States Postal Service (USPS) or FedEx.

FedEx shipping is based on "business days", so they don't deliver or ship on weekends. For example, an order placed on Friday night with "2-Day" FedEx shipping will arrive the following Wednesday.

They do offer Saturday deliveries to some cities, but they have a surcharge for that (usually over $12). Please contact us in advance or by phone if that's something you need as that will require special handling.  If you need Saturday delivery please do NOT just put a note in the checkout comments - that won't be seen until the order is actually packed and that might be too late to process.

International shipping is sent USPS First Class Air or International Priority Mail.

Occasionally we may need to use an alternate carrier, but we make sure the delivery speed is at least as fast as the service you've chosen and paid for (or we'll refund the difference in price).

If you've chosen a particular shipping method on purpose (ie, the US Postal Service won't deliver to your house, but FedEx does), please be sure to mention that in the checkout notes to make sure we don't give you an "upgrade" that makes things worse.

If we are offering a discount on shipping or similar promotion, it would apply only to shipping in the US and the shipping method would be "Ground" or "Standard" shipping only. If you'd like to ship faster, we'd be happy to arrange an upgrade.

If your order total is over $400 or we’ve had a failed delivery, we usually send the package with a "signature required" to help insure it's not simply left on your doorstep.

If you requested expedited shipping and end up returning your order, we can only refund a maximum of the “standard” shipping price.

How long will it take?

Depending on the shipping method you chose, it should take from 1 to 11 business days. During checkout we give a "best guess" for shipping time so you can pick the method you prefer.

For international addresses, most orders arrive in about 2 - 3 weeks (10 to 14 business days). Our experience has been that about 1 in 50 of orders takes as long as 5 weeks because of delays with customs (and there's no way to predict which ones will be slow - you just have to play the odds on that).

When possible we ship international orders in an envelope. We've found that Customs will hold boxes (on average) longer than envelopes.

Unfortunately, once it's in the mail system there is nothing we can do to speed things up. Some countries have notoriously slow delivery times.

Special note for Italy: because of problems shipping heavy packages, we cannot ship any orders over 16 ounces. We've very sorry for the inconvenience, but we've had extremely bad luck with the speed and reliability with the Italian mail system. Before we ship your order, we'll contact you to confirm you do not mind the limit or possible additional shipping time.

We also no longer deliver to most Eastern European countries, parts of Asia, and most of Africa. We've simply had way too many lost packages... Sorry. Please contact us if you're not sure and we'll let you know if we ship to your country.

How do I know it's been shipped?

You should receive an e-mail after your order has been packed and shipped so you'll know it's on the way. If there’s a tracking number or delivery confirmation number, that should be included in the e-mail.  If you didn't get the email it's usually because it got stuck in your spam folder or the email address you entered isn't correct.

Do you have any conditions for shipping International orders?

Yes. We've been shipping internationally for years, BUT unfortunately we've had to change our policy significantly. We've been swamped with fraudulent credit card orders lately. Since these have become so prevalent, we've had to limit the orders to $75 until we've established you as a "real" person.

It absolutely kills us to do this since, not only are we obviously losing business, but we're treating "you" as a criminal from the get-go. Not the way we've EVER done business before. Sadly the cost and number of the fraudulent orders has reached EPIC proportions! Not exactly a "sustainable" pace for us and we simply had to do something about it... :(

Please do keep in mind that if the package is "refused" on your end, we will be unable to refund the shipping charges.

How LONG will shipping take for International orders?

If you requested "Standard Shipping", it will be sent US First Class Air Mail. USPS says that's 14 - 21 business days plus any time it might wait in Customs.

"Priority Mail" for international orders has a stated delivery time of 6 - 10 business days. But again, that's also subject to Customs hold on top of that.

Our experience (anecdotally since we’ve never done research - just based on feedback) is that 40% of international orders take around a week and 80% take about 2 weeks or less. About 98% are there within 14 business days.

Keep in mind, we can't guarantee delivery times, since once it's in the mail system, we have no control over when it gets there. This is just to give you an idea of the time frame. We've seen stuff take as little as 2 days (!) and as long as 78 days (the record).

We won't mention any names, but some countries have really slow customs and if that's your country, you probably already know it. Brace yourself... It's not like our orders have a "magic get through customs fast" stamp for you guys - sorry.

We do try to ship orders using envelopes – depending on what it is - and that sometimes help get through Customs faster than boxes.

We also no longer deliver to most Eastern European countries, parts of Asia, and most of Africa. We've simply had way too many lost packages... Sorry. Please contact us if you're not sure and we'll let you know if we ship to your country.

Please do keep in mind that if the package is "refused" on your end, we will be unable to refund the shipping charges.

Do I have to pay taxes or duties on my purchase?

If you are shipping to an address in California, we are required to collect sales tax on the purchase.

If you are shipping to an address outside of the US, you may be subject to a Customs or Duty charge outside of our control. If you select a shipping method using the US Postal Service, there is no added "customs brokerage fee". Some shipping companies (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc.) do charge these fees in addition to Customs or Duty charges from your government, and again, they are outside of our control.

Can you mark my international order as a "GIFT" on the Customs form?

Sorry, no. It's not only against the law - it won't work.

Our labels have the customs form integrated into the design. That means it's usually pretty obvious to your postal service that you're getting a commercially shipped item - not cookies from your Grandmother in the United States.

What if I’m shipping to a PO Box or military addresses?

The United States Postal Service is the only service that will deliver to PO Boxes or APO/FPO's. If you are mailing to a non-street address and select a shipping method other than USPS your order will be delayed.

We will try to reach you for an alternate address or, failing that, refund your money and cancel the order.

Military addresses might require an additional day for processing before they leave the warehouse.

Can you use my UPS/DHL/FedEx account for shipping?

Sorry but no.  We don't have anyway of re-processing the order with an alternate shipping account.

Tracking for international orders?

Unfortunately, there's no tracking number with international shipments. We've tried other shipping methods (with a tracking number like DHL and FedEx), but they were just too expensive, there were always added "customs clearance" fees, and it didn't seem right charging more for shipping than the actual order.

The Customs number you received - depending on the method of shipping - just confirms delivery. It doesn't provide any information while the order is in transit.

Do I have to pay taxes or duties on my purchase?

If you are shipping to an address in California, we are required to collect a State sales tax (sorry).

If you are shipping to an address outside of the US, you may be subject to a Customs or Duty charges. If you select a shipping method using the US Postal Service, there is no "customs brokerage fee". Some shipping companies (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc.) do charge these fees.

Why can't I get the "Free Shipping" to show as an option?

If a "free shipping" promotion is currently available (not always - and sometimes only with a coupon code), and you're not seeing a shipping option that is "$0.00" for the cost, then most likely you're not using an eligible shipping destination. The free shipping applies only to "Ground” or “Standard” shipping which is normally available to us only in the Continental United States.
